RSS - the Web 2.0 Glue

Over the next five hours you are going to find yourself overwhelmed with information. Information you never knew you wanted. Too much information. Fortunately, we have RSS. It can give you at least a sense of control.

RSS Overview

  • Real Simple Syndication
  • Allows you to subscribe to feeds available at blogs, wikis, news sites, etc.
  • A feed is an XML file that indicates when a web site has been changed.
  • Web sites with a RSS feed will often have a little icon that says RSS, RSS 2.0, Atom, XML, feed, or subscribe.
  • Using an aggregator, such as Bloglines, you can track and read updates from dozens to hundreds of sites from a single web site.

Setting up Bloglines

  • The most powerful and simplistic aggregator is Bloglines. It is free and accessible anywhere in the world.
  • Set up an account at Bloglines.
  • Add the GUHSD 2006 Collaborative blog set up for this conference to your feeds. The feed can be found at: http://guhsd2006.blogspot.com/atom.xml

Throughout the day, if you come across a blog or wiki you would like to track - subscribe to it!
